SUMMARY:Wall Restoration Workshop\, Franktown
DESCRIPTION:Dry Stone Canada is pleased to announce we will be hosting a walling workshop at St. James Anglican Church in the village of Franktown (east of Perth\, Ontario). \n\n\n\nThe historic church requires 75 feet of their 180 ft historic dry stone wall repaired. The wall is 2 ft. wide and 4 ft high\, with round stones on the top as copes. \n\n\n\nThe focus of this workshop will be on the application of dry stone walling principles for the preservation of historic stone walls. Last year\, we removed several sections that were at risk of falling over\, and rebuilt a portion. This year we will continue with the restoration. Pictured below is the rebuilt portion. \n\n\n\nThe workshop will take place at the same time as the Franktown Lilac Festival (Saturday only). \n\n\n\nThis two-day workshop is suitable for beginners and intermediate wallers. No tools are required. \n\n\n\nWorkshops include a maximum of 12 registered participants. \n\n\n\nOur Host\n\n\n\nSt. James Anglican Church in Franktown\, Ontario\n\n\n\nSt. James is recognized as one of the oldest Anglican churches in Eastern Ontario in continuous use. The cornerstone of the church was laid in 1822 and completed in 1827. \n\n\n\nSt. James became part if the Clayton Parish\, sharing its Rector with St. George’s in Clayton\, and St. John’s in Innisville. However\, this little stone church still stands as a memorial to the hardy pioneers who built it. \n\n\n\nAbout Franktown and the Lilac Festival\n\n\n\nThe quaint hamlet of Franktown (on HWY 15\, north of Smith Falls\, Ontario) in Beckwith Township plays host each year to a festival that celebrates an explosion of fragrant colour! The Franktown Lilac Festival takes place in the heart of the hamlet\, with many activities at Centennial Hall\, 152 Church Street. Start things off with a hearty pancake breakfast\, then take part in the children’s bike parade\, followed by an afternoon of music. Enjoy a wagon ride to see the sights. Franktown was established in 1818-19 as the site of a supply store between Richmond and Perth and has a rich history with many examples of compelling eastern Ontario architecture along its famous Lilac Lane. Free admission. \n\n\n\nSchedule and Preparation\n\n\n\n\n\nTimes\n\n\n\nSaturday9:00: Overview and site work begins12:00 Lunch13:00 Review and continue work16:00 End of day one \n\n\n\nSunday9:00: Review work and continue12:00 Lunch13:00 Review and continue16:00 Final photo and workshop close \n\n\n\n*Lunch and snacks are included \n\n\n\n\n\nRequired Equipment\n\n\n\n\nSafety glasses\n\n\n\nSafety boots (if you have them)\n\n\n\nGloves (don’t bring expensive gloves they get shredded just as quickly as the cheap ones)\n\n\n\nAppropriate clothing – We work in all weather conditions\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDirections and Accomodations\n\n\n\n\n\nHow to Get There\n\n\n\nSt. James Anglican Church \n\n\n\n\n\nWhere to Stay\n\n\n\nThe village of Franktown is situated near Smith Falls\, Perth\, and Almonte. SUMMARY:Heritage Wall Restoration Workshop\, Cherry Hill
DESCRIPTION:Dry Stone Canada is proud to partner with The Friends of Cherry Hill Cemetery to offer this 2 day walling workshop. This is the fourth time Dry Stone Canada has offered a workshop outside of Ontario! \n\n\n\nCherry Hill is a seaside village in Lunenburg county\, Nova Scotia\, about one hundred fifteen kilometres from Halifax. It’s on the Lighthouse Route. Nearby communities are Vogler’s Cove (3 km) and Broad Cove (4 km). Slightly further afield are the villages of Petite Riviere\, Mill Village\, and Port Medway. \n\n\n\nThe Friends of Cherry Hill Old Community Cemetery propose to restore a cemetery wall dating from the 1840s. It defines the entrance to the resting place of the many of Cherry Hill’s first early settlers. Currently\, much of the wall is hidden under an overgrowth of shrub and grass.  \n\n\n\nThe remnants of stone walls throughout the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg attest to two centuries of dry stone walling tradition all over the district. The Friends of Cherry Hill Old Community Cemetery are a group of volunteers who want to preserve local history and to learn more of the art of dry stone walling. \n\n\n\nOur Host\n\n\n\nThe Friends of Cherry Hill Cemetery\, is a not for profit organization dedicated to Cherry Hill Cemetery \n\n\n\nSchedule and Preparation\n\n\n\n\n\nTimes\n\n\n\nFriday19:00 – 20:30 Public talk: Dry Stone Diaries Walling in Nova Scotia & Beyond \n\n\n\nSaturday08:30 – Welcome\, instruction\, field work12:00 – Lunch13:00 – Review and field work16:00 – End of day 1 workshop16:00 – BBQ at local home \n\n\n\nSunday             08:30 – Review work and continue12:00 – Lunch13:00 – Review and continue16:00 – Final photo and end \n\n\n\n*Lunch and snacks are included \n\n\n\n\n\nRequired Equipment\n\n\n\n\nSafety glasses\n\n\n\nSafety boots (if you have them)\n\n\n\nGloves (don’t bring expensive gloves\, they get shredded just as quickly as the cheap ones)\n\n\n\nAppropriate clothing – we work in all weather conditions\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDirections and Accommodations\n\n\n\n\n\nHow to Get There\n\n\n\nCherry Hill Cemetery \n\n\n\n\n\nWhere to Stay\n\n\n\nHotels are available about 40 km away in the towns of Liverpool or Bridgewater.Risser’s Beach Provincial Park is about 12 km away.Friends of Cherry Hill Old Community Cemetery will try to find billets for participants if needed. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister now

SUMMARY:Dry Stone Walling Competition\, The Lodge\, Amherst Island
DESCRIPTION:Join us Friday for our first Dry Stone Canada competition! \n\n\n\nThe competition will happen at the Amherst Island Lodge. Previously owned and run by long-time walling supporter Molly Stroyman\, the lodge now has lovely new owners Graham and Tagget. A wall that we previously built at another festival will be the wall used for the competition\, moving it slightly back to accommodate better parking for the new owners.  \n\n\n\nWe welcome all levels of walling. This is a fun way to practice speed and not overthinking!!!! We are following in the tradition of many a dry stone wall competition around the world and excited to start our own legacy. Each participant will be given a small section of wall to take down and rebuild in a specific amount of time. Come try your hand at it! There will be prizes for everyone\, including first prize of $500\, second prize $250 and third prize $100 along with all kinds of goodies. Among our walling judges will be Neil Rippingdale from the Kentucky Dry Stone Conservancy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCheck out some information on our walling comrade and the Kentucky Conservancy here: \n\n\n\nhttps://www.ptn.org/Neil-Rippingale \n\n\n\nhttps://www.drystone.org/boardandstaff \n\n\n\nSign up for the competition today. Deadline is September 17 (so we have time to plan the walls accordingly) \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nSOLD OUT

SUMMARY:Festiposium\, McMullen House\, Amherst Island
DESCRIPTION:Dry Stone Canada aims to host an event that is smaller than a festival\, bigger than a workshop\, and focused on sharing knowledge and perspective about working with dry stone.  \n\n\n\nIn 2020\, before the pandemic\, the Association had planned to host a small event on Amherst Island in this spirit.  \n\n\n\nThe McMullen Farm was the proposed location. The McMullen Farm is one of the oldest homes on the island\, and it has a wall that is in dire need of repair. The McMullens are long time supporters and friends of Dry Stone Canada\, and a popular spot for billeting and social time during our festivals on the Island. Audra McMullen has been dedicating her research to what inspires wallers to do the work they do and will be presenting some of her work for our Friday evening get together. \n\n\n\nWe had a very successful rebuild of the East part of a historical wall that they have along their property when we hosted the first symposium. We are now inviting you to the second part of this\, to complete the west side of the wall.  \n\n\n\nThese rebuilds are open to our current membership\, for those of all levels of walling. This is not an introductory course so knowing the basics of walling is a prerequisite for everyone enjoying their time. One of the great benefits of these events is getting to learn different approaches to walling\, learning new techniques and getting to know new wallers from folks who might be your neighbors to folks from across the globe.  \n\n\n\nWe ask you to please sign up for the Festiposium so that we can make sure we have enough food\, drink and accommodations for all.  \n\n\n\nIf you are not yet a member but would love to join us\, we have 4 upcoming intro workshops you can sign up for to get the rudimentaries of walling. Check out our workshop list to sign up. \n\n\n\nIf hands-on walling is not your thing but you would love to participate in other ways\, consider signing up for our stone carving workshop. Taught by Danny Barber from Ottawa\, this course is open to all levels. Stone is included in the registration cost. \n\n\n\nSchedule\n\n\n\nA) Friendly/Inclusive Walling Competition\, September 26 – Please sign up on the main page or email us if you want to participate\, we promise it will be fun\, friendly and we will have prizes! $25 entrance fee. \n\n\n\nB) Wall Restorations and Cheekend Rebuilding\, September 27-28 – Please let us know if you want to take on a cheekend\, we have limited numbers\, and we will have more experienced wallers lead each one\, so it will be a learning opportunity. This part of the festiposium is open to all members and anyone who has taken a previous workshop with us (please join or renew your membership if needed) as it is a collective rebuild rather than an introductory workshop. All levels welcome. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nC) Talks and Presentations in the Evenings – Friday will be a social for members and Saturday\, we encourage the public to join us for talks and film screenings with our guest wallers from Greece\, our number one walling fan and researcher\, Audra McMullen and the award ceremony for the competition and some other little surprises. \n\n\n\nD) Special Guests – Various international wallers have expressed interest in attending\, and we have a special group of Greek wallers who have confirmed attendance. \n\n\n\nE) Boveda-Build Demonstration (Brick masonry vault constructed without formwork) – A possibility (TBD) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nF) A Beginner Stone Carving Workshop\, September 27-28\, with Danny Barber\, he’s wonderful and has been running lots of workshops with us over the years. You can sign up for this workshop on our main page. \n\n\n\nA more detailed schedule to follow. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister now

SUMMARY:Wall Restoration Workshop\, Campbellford
DESCRIPTION:For many years Dry Stone Canada hosted\, with The Friends of Ferris\, a wall restoration workshop in Ferris Provincial Park in Campbellford. And although that project is complete\, we are not done in Campbellford. Now\, thanks to our friends from Ferris\, we have connected with another host to rebuild another wall just east of town. \n\n\n\nThis property is beautifully situated in the Trent Hills. The wall is only about 50 years old but\, due to well-intentioned but unfortunate building methods\, the wall is failing. Our project is to tear down a section and rebuild it. This workshop is suitable for beginners. \n\n\n\nOur Host\n\n\n\nStone Haven\, Pethericks Corner\, Ontario\n\n\n\nRoger and Hazel are our hosts. The home is a classic Loyalist stone house on a 5 acre property in the Trent Hills. \n\n\n\nSchedule and Preparation\n\n\n\n\n\nTimes\n\n\n\nSaturday9:00: Overview and site work begins12:00 Lunch13:00 Review and continue work16:00 End of day one \n\n\n\nSunday9:00: Review work and continue12:00 Lunch13:00 Review and continue16:00 Final photo and workshop close \n\n\n\n*Lunch and snacks are included \n\n\n\n\n\nRequired Equipment\n\n\n\n\nSafety glasses\n\n\n\nSafety boots (if you have them)\n\n\n\nGloves (don’t bring expensive gloves they get shredded just as quickly as the cheap ones)\n\n\n\nAppropriate clothing – We work in all weather conditions\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDirections and Accommodations\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister now\n\n\n\nVolunteer

They combine time-honoured tradition with modernity to produce premium\, 100% raw honey and beeswax products—made only by their bees. The historic farm is located on 111 acres of pasture\, forest and wildflower meadows. The property features a Victorian farmhouse and a well-preserved barn dating back to the late 1800’s. They are passionate about maintaining the original character of the farm and are excited about the opportunity to rebuild the stone wall at the front entrance of the property. \n\n\n\nThis dry stone workshop is designed for beginner level wallers.
\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister now\n\n\n\nVolunteer

SUMMARY:Wall Workshop\, Lombardy
DESCRIPTION:Our Host\n\n\n\nIn early 2020\, Sabina Barrett and Byron Carroll purchased the McKinney House property\, unaware of its historical significance or long-standing reputation as a local landmark. Byron is an Ironworker and Welder with experience in masonry and carpentry\, while Sabina has a background in architecture and works as a Conservation Technologist and Heritage Planner. The mid-19th-century stone house was built by blacksmith William McKinney along the former stagecoach route between Bytown and Kingston\, establishing the property as an early hub of rural industry and travel. One of its defining features was the stone wall at the front of the property\, later moved during the 1950s highway expansion and now significantly deteriorated. They are committed to restoring the property with care\, beginning with rebuilding the stone wall as close to its original location as possible\, preserving a character-defining feature that has framed the landmark for over 165 years. \n\n\n\nSchedule and Preparation\n\n\n\n\n\nTimes\n\n\n\nSaturday9:00: Overview and site work begins12:00 Lunch13:00 Review and continue work16:00 End of day one \n\n\n\nSunday9:00: Review work and continue12:00 Lunch13:00 Review and continue16:00 Final photo and workshop close \n\n\n\n*Lunch and snacks are included \n\n\n\n\n\nRequired Equipment\n\n\n\n\nSafety glasses\n\n\n\nSafety boots (if you have them)\n\n\n\nGloves (don’t bring expensive gloves they get shredded just as quickly as the cheap ones)\n\n\n\nAppropriate clothing – We work in all weather conditions\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister now\n\n\n\nVolunteer
